Does offering free shipping actually pay? (2026)

"Free shipping" is never free — you're paying for it, and on most marketplaces you're paying a fee on it too. Here's when offering it still makes you money, and when it quietly eats your margin.
The catch nobody mentions
When you offer free shipping, you don't stop paying for the label — you bake its cost into a higher item price. The problem: most marketplaces (eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Walmart, Mercari) charge their selling fee on the total the buyer pays. So whether shipping shows as a separate $6 line or is folded into the price, the platform takes its percentage of it either way.
The math, side by side
Say a label costs you $6, your platform fee is 13%, and you want the buyer's all-in cost to be $46 either way:
Identical. Because the fee is charged on the total either way, free shipping doesn't cost you extra fees compared to charging the same all-in price — the myth that it does comes from comparing a higher "free shipping" price to a lower item-only price, which isn't apples-to-apples.
When free shipping costs you
- Heavy or oversized items. A $15 label on a $25 item makes "free shipping" a $40 price — and a fee on the whole $40. The shipping dominates; charge it transparently or rethink the product.
- Wildly variable shipping zones. If shipping ranges from $5 to $20 by region, a single baked-in price overcharges nearby buyers and undercharges far ones. Calculated shipping can serve you better.
- Thin margins. If you're already near break-even, absorbing shipping into the price can tip you under it. Check before you commit.
Run it both ways
The honest answer is "it depends on your item" — so test it. Enter your price and shipping with and without free shipping in your marketplace's calculator and compare the net profit:
Frequently asked questions
Do marketplaces charge fees on shipping?
On most — eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Walmart, Mercari, Reverb, Bonanza — yes, the fee is on item + shipping. Poshmark and Grailed charge on the item price only.
Is free shipping worth it?
Usually, for light-to-standard items — the conversion and search-ranking lift outweighs the small fee on the shipping portion. Just price it in so your margin holds, and skip it on heavy or shipping-variable items.
